At least five police officers were killed in Cairo Saturday after gunmen opened fire on a checkpoint, AFP reports.
Police also found two bombs at the site and detonated them safely.
The attack took place on the outskirts of Cairo in the Shubra al Kheima neighborhood. The government has blamed the Muslim Brotherhood which has denied involvement, according to AFP.
Recent attacks on security forces in Egypt have been claimed by the jihadist group Ansar Beit al Maqdis.
Egyptian officials expect more violence in the months to come as Egypt’s presidential election is set to happen this spring.
