Egyptian police have detained four members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood in dawn raids across the country. Members from Cairo, the northern port city of Alexandria, and the Delta towns of Kafr al-Sheikh and Mansura were arrested for allegedly possessing and distributing literature from a banned organization.
"It is part of the continuous campaign against the Brotherhood," said the group's spokesman Issam al-Aryan, according to AFP.
The arrests came less than a week after President Hosni Mubarak said that the "outlawed Brotherhood group is a danger to Egypt's security because of its religious discourse."
On his part, Mohammed Mahdi Akef, the Supreme Guide of the banned-but-tolerated Muslim Brotherhood published a declaration, cited Wednesday by Asharq alAwsat newspaper, saying the movement is keen on Egypt's stability and security. He also said his movement was ready for a serious dialogue with the authorities.
