Dubai's chief of announced Monday that the Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) had donated Dh250,000 for the welfare of orphans via the local Juvenile Association.
Major-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said at a press conference held at the charity facility of the Dubai Police that he hoped the Juvenile Association would add a further Dh150,000 to the donation made by the DIB, taking the total earmarked for the association's orphans to Dh400,000.
According to the Dubai-based paper, the top officer encouraged nationals to put their money in those banks and financial institutions that support charity causes, give zakat, or alms, and support orphans and the poor, pointing to the important social role banks have to play in this regard.
He stressed that only through this kind of social cooperation and participation could crime and poverty be eradicated.
"If a person is in need he can steal, even kill, due to immense psychological pressures that thrusts that person toward delinquency. This way, the bank shares the orphans' problems and helps them solve these problems," the general said.
Husein Al Meeza said that the zakat committee of the bank had earmarked Dh500,000 for the support of orphans, half of which would go to the Juvenile Association. The rest, he said, would be distributed through the UAE Red Crescent Society and the Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charity and Humanitarian Foundation – Albawaba.com
