Dubai Naturalization and Residency Department (DNRD) announced today that it spotted 336 falsified documents and passports in 2008 after deploying the Electronic Documentation Information System on Network (EDISON) at the Dubai International Airport. The figure, which was announced during GITEX 2008, is part of the department’s constant efforts to maintain a high level of security measures in the emirate.
The EDISON system, which is currently implemented by DNRD at the Dubai International Airport’s various terminals, aims to assist passport control officers in detecting forged travel documents. The system is recognized as a global reference for testing the authenticity and validity of government-issued documents and contains images of over 1,400 genuine and fake travel document samples - updated every four months - from over 190 countries.
"DNRD is constantly striving to ensure homeland security by adapting the highest technological standards for detecting the most sophisticated fake passports, thereby improving the ability of our officers at passport control points to identify falsified passports quickly and efficiently," said Major General Mohammad Ahmad Al-Merri, Director General of DNRD. "Customers can really sense now the improved capacities of our staff and we are proud of our integrated efforts to help preserve the security of the nation."
DNRD has recently conducted an extensive training program on the system to reinforce its employees' skills and ability to spot falsified documents. It has also created an integrated blacklist system that makes the names and details of wanted criminals and offenders’ common knowledge to every staff member at Dubai’s airports, seaports and land border security stations.
DNRD also announced today a number of automated, value-added, customer care services including self-service kiosks and facial recognition systems, in addition to M-Visa and Amer services. The department's pavilion, which is located at B2-A hall 8, includes a network of workstations that offer real simulations of all of its services for visitors to learn and try them first.
