DHL invests JOD 2.6 m (US$3.7 m) in Jordan Hub, boosting its Middle East infrastructure
Four thousand square feet, state-of-the-art facility now in operation
DHL Express, the world’s largest express and logistics company, today announced that its JOD 2.6 m (US$3.7 million) Hub in Jordan is now fully operational. The new facility combines a state-of-the-art airside operation with the hub and transit point. The Hub services all of DHL’s road activity from the GCC through to the Levant, North Africa, and Europe.
Visible on landing at Amman Airport, the DHL Hub is spread across 4,000 sq metres, with dedicated DHL staff operating the facility. The Hub already handles 740,000 kilos every month, and has the capacity to double this within 18 months. Operating 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, every day of the year, the Hub is improving speed of delivery of inbound shipments into the country, plus provides added security and safety of all goods transiting through Jordan to other destinations.
“With the economies of the Middle East continuing to grow, this region remains a key focus for DHL. With the completion of the Jordan Hub we are adding strength to our regional infrastructure. This will benefit customers in the GCC, Levant and Europe who are sending shipments by road as well as those customers importing and exporting to and from Jordan,” said Paul Bicknell, DHL Middle East Facilities Engineer. “The JOD 2.6 m (US$3.7 million) investment underlines our commitment to the Middle East and strengthening our global network. At DHL, we are continually striving to boost our customer service through speed, accuracy and reliability. The robust operational procedures in place at the Jordan Hub will enable us to continue to improve this.”
Airside facility pioneers operational procedures
The airside facility has pioneered new operational processes not seen in Jordan before. The security system with 47 CCTV cameras, X-ray equipment and an access control system, ensures a secure and safe environment. In addition, shipments arrive at the DHL Hub within 20 minutes of the aircraft’s arrival, thereby providing DHL with a distinct advantage.
The customs unit situated inside the facility provides DHL with round-the-clock customs clearance, with dedicated staff clearing material.
“The Jordan Hub has been designed to improve efficiency, loading and service times, thereby providing our customers with a fast, reliable service second to none,” explained Mazen Saba, DHL Jordan’s Operations Manager.
Jordan Hub acts as gateway to Europe and the Levant
The road operation linking with the Jordan Hub has been operational since June 2008, and offers an important connection between the GCC, Levant and Europe via Turkey. Due to the geographical location of Jordan, the new Hub will improve the overall regional infrastructure and increase the transit speed of goods travelling via road.
“This transport corridor is important to the global network and the new Hub will heighten speed, efficiency, accuracy and significantly bolster DHL’s operational capacity in the region,” noted Bachi Spiga, DHL Middle East Head of Operations.
Currently, the Hub is processing an average of six 40–foot trucks every day, and is able to offer competitive transit times due to customs availability on site. The Hub offers one point of contact for all Levant road traffic for inbound and outbound movements, and a Truck Watch system is in operation, monitoring the location of each truck at all times, ensuring safety and security for shipments while in transit.
