Hundreds of demonstrators started to build a sand barrier on Saturday in front of the congress building, where ministers from around the world are meeting to discuss climate change.
Environmental group Friends of the Earth rallied the demonstrators, who filled sacks with sand which had been brought by trucks and dumped in several piles along the avenue in front of the congress center.
Organizers of the demonstration said that the sand barrier was an act of solidarity with countries most threatened by changes to the world's climate, and especially those who will suffer from rising sea levels.
Police kept a low-key presence.
The UN-sponsored Hague talks, a final bid to breathe life into the Kyoto Protocol, a treaty aimed at staving off global warming, opened November 13 and are scheduled to conclude on November 24 -- THE HAGUE (AFP)
