The Social Care Sector in the Community Development Authority in Dubai (CDA) recently organised a discussion session with numerous officials in the penitentiary facilities in Dubai and Sharjah to discuss the programs and work mechanisms within such facilities.
The day long session, led by Dr Hussein Al Masseih, Social Expert in CDA, discussed a wide spectrum of topics including methods to upgrade the programs provided for inmates and how to transfer them into rehabilitation rather than restraining them to punitive. Discussions also included mechanisms for the introduction of amnesty and linking them with the commitment and behavioural programs followed by the institutions, and recommended that they be aligned with community programs. The session also discussed the different aspects that are assessed before issuing the amnesty as well as how to promote the role of social workers in these institutions.
“This initiative is part of the social services provided by the Community Development Authority in Dubai. The co-operation with penitentiary institutions aims to develop and reform this fragment of society and re-invest their abilities and talents in ways that will benefit the society. The initial step is an investment in the time spent by inmates in tailored rehabilitation programs within the institutions, which will reflect positively on their lives after the time spent in the institution,” said Dr Hussein.
