US President Bill Clinton stressed the importance of saving the peace process and said Washington was doing all it could to end the current violence, in phone call with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Sunday, a Palestinian official said.
"Mr. Clinton told Chairman Arafat it was necessary to save the peace process," said Nabil Abu Rudeina, quoted by the Palestinian WAFA news agency.
"The American president assured Mr. Arafat the United States was making every effort to end the current deterioration of the situation," he added.
Clinton also expressed condolences to Arafat and the Palestinian people for those killed since the clashes with the Israeli security forces started Thursday.
Earlier, Clinton spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak about the situation in Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories.
Barak spokesman David Zisso said the United States and Spain were mediating contacts to put an end to the violence -- RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP)
