Lebanon’s premier medical institution Clemenceau Medical Center (CMC), affiliated to Johns Hopkins Medicine International, together with GE Heatlhcare officially opened recently its advanced Imaging and Nuclear Medicine Department, under the auspices of the Lebanese Minister of Health, HE Dr. Mohamed Jawad Khalifeh.

The opening also marked the first regional installation of the GE Discovery ST PET/CT 16-slice, the most advanced technology in imaging, used in non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of a number of conditions including cancers, neurological disorders and cardiovascular diseases.

The opening also marked the first regional installation of the GE Discovery ST PET/CT 16-slice, the most advanced technology in imaging, used in non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of a number of conditions including cancers, neurological disorders and cardiovascular diseases.

“CMC’s new Imaging and Nuclear Medicine Department is a fully equipped facility that employs cutting-edge medical imaging technologies,” said Dr Mounes Kalaawi, Chief Executive Officer, Clemenceau Medical Centre.

“The department will enhance CMC’s standing as a one-stop medical service and cater to all the needs of patients from Lebanon and the Middle East.”

“Our patients will be among the first to benefit from the new treatment and technology, pioneered by doctors and researchers,” he added.

The department highlights new research findings in medical imaging like the advances in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), LightSpeed Volume Computed Tomography (VCT) for cardiac and whole body scanning, gamma camera, mammography, fluoroscopy, densitometry and 4D ultrasound systems apart from the GE Discovery ST PET/CT 16-slice. All these imaging procedures are linked to a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for totally film-less medical imaging.

GE’s Discovery ST system integrates the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and 16-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanners in a single, non-invasive examination. While PET creates images of metabolic activity in the body, the CT creates images of the body’s anatomy. Paired together, PET/CT scans allow physicians to more accurately pinpoint where the disease is located, resulting in better therapy selection. Some of its functions include whole body scanning including Cardiac CT to visualize heart vessels without catheterization, and colon imaging (colonography) without performing colonoscopy.

“The powerful images from PET/CT 16-slice cannot be obtained by any other means,” said Dr Kalaawi. “They enable physicians to identify abnormalities at a very early stage. The PET/CT reveals organ function as well as structure and can reveal disease-related biological changes several years before the patients experience the symptoms. The versatility of the system ensures that treatment can be begun early thus leading to high rates of success. It also reduces stress levels of patients as the procedure is non-invasive. With our range of medical imaging facilities, CMC Imaging Center is undoubtedly one of the leading radiology departments in the Middle East.”

“CMC is one of the frontrunners in employing the latest medical innovation,” said William Wakileh, GE National Executive, the Levant & Iraq. “The new facility complements CMC’s roster of top-notch medical services by offering the latest equipment from GE Healthcare in medical imaging and nuclear medicine, a critical component in modern diagnosis and treatment.”

At the seminar hosted by CMC and GE, Dr Sami Faddoul, Chief, Radiology Department, introduced the latest modalities in imaging and diagnosis at CMC. Professor Mustafa Unlu, Vice Dean, Professor and Chairman, Gazi University Nuclear Medicine Department, lectured on clinical applications of PET/CT scans and its impact on patient management. Medical professionals from all over the region attended the event, which gave a new insight into medical imaging technology.
