Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov will send a letter to be read at the Arab Summit underway in Amman, said a source close to the president.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Albawaba.com that said that Maskhadov will ask the arab leaders to put pressures on Russia to work on a solution to the Chechen issue.

The leader says in the letter that the Chechens seek a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov was elected in official polls in 1997 but no longer recognized by Moscow. He has denied involvement in anti-Russian bomb attacks that took place lately.

According to AFP, Russia has begun scaling down its military presence in Chechnya, where it intervened massively on October 1, 1999. It has handed over responsibility for security to interior ministry and FSB (ex-KGB, security department) forces.
