A bomb went off overnight at an electricity sub-station near the home of Prime Minister Goeran Persson in the southern city of Malmo, police said Sunday.
Persson was at home at the time of the explosion, having returned from the United Nations Millennium Summit in New York, the source added.
No one was hurt in the incident.
The bomb was placed in a sub-station 30 to 40 yards (meters) from the prime minister's house, police said.
Detectives have not ruled out that it was intended as an attack on the prime minister, Bo Engerby, the officer in charge of the investigation, told the Swedish news agency TT.
Persson's security team said the sound of the blast did not wake them, which happened at 3:00 am (0100 GMT). No one was hurt in the explosion.
Neighbors quoted in the Swedish press on Sunday claimed that the blast could be heard "well beyond" the prime minister's home.
The explosion totally destroyed a stall belonging to a sausage vendor next to the sub-station, police said -- STOCKHOLM (AFP)
