Israel's caretaker Prime Minister Ehud Barak on Thursday congratulated George W. Bush on his victory in the US election and said he was convinced his administration would continue to work for peace in the Middle East.
"The prime minister said he is convinced that the courageous friendship and special ties between the two countries will continue and that that new administration will continue on the path set by its predecessor and will be ready to help the people of the region to find peace," he said, according to a statement from his office.
Bush is due to take over from President Bill Clinton at the White House on January 20 after a tortuous five weeks of suspense following the US election that pitted him against Vice President Al Gore -- JERUSALEM (AFP)
