Bahrain is keen to end its monopoly in the communications sector, said Transportation Minister Sheikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa on Wednesday.

The minister’s remarks came during the opening ceremony of the Gulf Coordination Council (GCC) ministerial postal and communications committee meeting in Manama, reported the Gulf Daily News.

He said Bahrain also planned to start drawing up laws in the e-commerce sector to cope with international communications developments and to meet future global challenges.

Sheikh Ali stressed the importance of the communications field and its vital role in developing economic and social life and increased leisure opportunities, according to the paper.

He added that with their pioneering experiences, GCC states should deal with global challenges in the communications sector and upgrade their services through increased cooperation.

GCC Secretary-General Jamil Al Hujailan, in his speech, urged GCC post and communication services to upgrade their technical levels.

He added that foreign communications companies used their technical skills to attract international eyes and ears, while GCC companies still possessed a very small vision and low ambition in dealing with current developments – Albawaba.com
