At least 16 people were killed, including women and children, and 35 injured by a car bomb in northern Baghdad on Thursday, security officials said. The blast occurred in the Shahab district, a defence ministry source said, giving the toll, which was confirmed by an interior ministry source.

According to the AP, police and hospital officials said the explosives-laden car was parked near a bus terminal surrounded by shops when it blew up shortly after noon.

Four children and three women were among those killed, according to officials at two local hospitals, cited by AFP.  Shahab is located north of Sadr City.
