French President Jacques Chirac discussed the violence in the Middle East in a phone conversation with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad Sunday, the official Syrian news agency SANA reported.
They discussed "the upsurge in violence seen in the region as a result of Israel's provocations in Jerusalem's holy places and its excessive use of force against the Palestinian people" in the call, which was initiated by Chirac, SANA said.
The two leaders "weighed up the dangers" threatening the region "for which Israel is responsible," the agency said -- DAMASCUS (AFP)
