Palestinian President Yasser Arafat is due to arrive in Ankara on Wednesday for an unscheduled visit, a Palestinian diplomat told AFP.
Arafat will meet Turkish officials "to discuss the prospects in the Middle East process following the election victory of Ariel Sharon and the developments in Palestine," said Ibrahim Tamim, counselor at the Palestinian mission.
The Palestinian leader will hold talks with Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Foreign Minister Ismail Cem before leaving on Thursday morning, he said.
Cem, during talks with Iranian officials in Tehran, said that Turkey is interested in playing a major role in revenging the stumbling peace process, according to the Iranian News Agency (IRAN).
He said that Turkey supports the Palestinians in their demands based on UN resolutions.
