Arab leaders reconvened in Cairo Sunday morning for the second and final day of an emergency Arab summit to support the Palestinians in their conflict with Israel. Meanwhile, the Iraqi delegation has said that they will declare their reservations on the final statement to be issued the same day.
Sources from the delegation told Albawaba.com that Izzat Ibrahim, who deputized for President Saddam Hussein at the meeting, has decided to object to the resolutions of the meeting, because “they are not up to the current circumstances.”
Ibrahim, Deputy Chairman of the Iraqi Revolutionary Council, said in his speech that Iraq is for declaring Jihad (holy war) against Israel.
However, Iraq will support the Saudi proposals to set up two funds for financial support of the Palestinians.
The sources said that Ibrahim met early Saturday, before the opening session, with Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak and informed him of the contents of his speech at the summit.
“He told the president that his speech would show an Iraqi stand contradictory to those of the majority of the Arab states,” they said, adding that the president suggested that Ibrahim temper down the tone of the address, but the Iraqi representative apologized for having to turn down Mubarak’s appeal.
