Bringing Local Visual Artists into the Limelight

In line with the Kingdom’s Independence Day festivities and in conjunction with the City’s Centennial celebrations, the City streets will host, for the first time, the Street Exhibition for Visual Arts. The exhibition which was launched on June 4, 2009 features works of several local and international photography artists as well as performances by local skit drama and musical talents.

Moving across several locations in the city, the exhibition aims at attracting more people from different walks of life to appreciate the beauty of visual arts. This innovative endeavour is organized by the Korean Academy for Visual Arts, represented by Ms. Sun Young, in cooperation with the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), and the University of Jordan’s Faculty of Fine Arts- represented by Professors Ghaliah Al Mefleh and Nada Jaffar, in addition to LG Electronics.

“This exhibition, with its novel concept, hails Jordanian society, and attests to the fact that it is art which comes to audiences and not the other way around. We strive, through this exhibition, to enable visitors to discover the promising creative potentials of Jordanian youth, and we also hope to stress the objectives of cultural exchange between Jordan and Korea,” explained Ms. Sun Young. She added, “The importance of art lies in its everlasting ability to enrich people’s minds and souls, and infuse their hearts with joy and delight. This constitutes the main goal of our current endeavor in Jordan, and we hope that all members of the public will interact with the exhibition’s activities which we opted to spread over a period of one month, giving everyone the chance to visit.”

From his end, the Managing Director of LG Electronics Levant, Mr. Kevin Cha, expressed his pleasure with LG’s sponsorship of the Street Exhibition. He said, “This exhibition provides the perfect opportunity for all talented youth who preach from the pulpit of art, music, and acting, to display their creativity. We willingly elected to provide our support the Exhibition, which we believe, affirms our connection to and interaction with all strata of Jordanian society, particularly youth. This is a fresh and fun experience –one which we hope will recur in the future through active participation from different social and cultural sectors.”

It is worthy of note that LG took the initiative in presenting a number of recreational activities in the exhibition, including competitions and prize draws. Visitors also have the opportunity to express their feelings and aspirations for Jordan in writing on colored paper which will later be assembled to form a mosaic of Jordan’s national flag. Participants in this event can also enter a draw for LG prizes, and take pictures with their loved ones in front of beautiful backdrops, using LG’s new Cookie phone.

The Cultural Street Exhibition in Amman encompasses a series of different artistic and recreational activities and contributions, including a photographic exhibition, music concerts, and dramatic performances, in addition to an exhibition of the beautiful and unique photographs of Jordan taken by famous Korean photographer, Tommy Lee. The significant elements of the activities shall be touring the various areas of Amman, starting with Salem Al Qda (Al Wakalat) Street in Sweifieh, to Rainbow Street, to Al Thaqafeh (Culture) Street, in addition to which the University of Jordan and Mecca Mall will also host some of these festive actions.
