An American soldier was shot dead while on patrol in central Iraq early Tuesday, a military spokesman said, according to AP.

The shooting took place near the town of Balad, some 90 kilometers north of Baghdad, said Maj. William Thurmond, a spokesman for the U.S. Army's V Corps.

Meanwhile, British PM, Tony Blair returns to Britain Tuesday to face a growing revolt from within his own party over Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction. Blair rejected claims that his aides had "cooked" intelligence material in a dossier published to convince doubters.

More than 50 Labour MPs have already signed a motion, calling on the Government to publish the evidence behind the dossier.

Robin Cook, who quit the Cabinet in protest at the war, said: "He (Blair) said that there were weapons that could be used in 45 minutes. There are no such weapons." (Albawaba.com)
