Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed Iran would play a “key role in the management of the world” during his swearing in ceremony Wednesday for his second term as president amid continued demonstrations on the streets of Tehran. Reading his oath, Ahmadinejad promised to use his power to serve the country.
“We must play a key role in the management of the world,” Ahmadinejad said. “We will not remain silent. We will not tolerate disrespect, interference and insults. I will spare no effort to safeguard the frontiers of Iran,” he added.
“Some countries have not recognized the elections or extended their congratulations. They do not respect the rights of other nations, yet they recognize themselves as the yardstick for democracy,” he said in reference to some Western countries. “Nobody in Iran is waiting for anyone's congratulations.”
Calling for Iranians to move forward, he said, “Who has voted for whom. This is not the question. Today we need a national resolve. Today we need to join forces.”
