ALBAWABA- A tragic incident struck Vancouver on Saturday when a car rammed into a crowd gathered to celebrate Filipino national hero Lapu Lapu.
The attack left at least eight people dead and six others seriously injured, according to local authorities.
The driver, who has been arrested at the scene, is suspected to suffer from mental health disorders, though investigations are still ongoing.
The devastating event occurred just hours before Canada heads into political elections scheduled for tomorrow, adding further tension to an already sensitive atmosphere.
Witnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as emergency services rushed to assist the victims.
Police confirmed that the driver has been taken into custody. Witnesses described him as a young Asian male, possibly suffering from mental health issues, although authorities have not yet confirmed a motive.
The attack occurred during one of Vancouver’s major cultural gatherings, held in honor of Filipino national hero Datu Lapu-Lapu.
Reacting to the tragedy, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim stated, “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”
