ALBAWABA - A 6.02-magnitude earthquake jolted Turkey on Wednesday, the Minister of Interior of Turkey confirmed.

Turkish minister Ali Yerlikaya posted on his official X account, saying: "An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 occurred in Silivri, Marmara Sea, Istanbul. Regarding the earthquake that was also felt in the surrounding provinces, AFAD and all teams of our relevant institutions have started field scans."

He maintained: "I offer my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters."

According to The National, a strong earthquake struck western Turkey, scaring residents who were seen running to the streets in Istanbul to escape shaking buildings.

It is worth mentioning that back on Feb. 6, 2023, two powerful earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria in the space of 12 hours, killing more than 55,000 people.

The first quake, measuring 7.8 magnitude, struck south-eastern Turkey (near the Syrian border), while the second one hit about four kilometres outside Ekinozu in central Turkey.
