New statistics by Morocco's planning ministry showed that at least 19 percent of Moroccans live below poverty line, reported PanAfrica News Agency (PANA).

The ministry said in a report published Saurday that the situation was more critical in rural areas, particularly in the central region of Meknes-Tafilalet, where poverty affects 36 percent of the population, said the agency.

The report added that 66 percent of the poor live in rural areas, where 46 percent of the population lives.

According to the report, the poor represent 23.2 percent of the population in rural areas of southern regions compared with 6 percent in urban areas.

Poverty affects 30.5 percent of rural dwellers in northern Morocco and 10.4 percent in urban areas, said the agency - Albawaba.com
