ALBAWABA - Indian officials said that a double-decker bus collided with a milk truck killing 18 people and injuring 19 in Utter Pradesh state, northern India.

"The bus rammed into the tanker from behind killing 18 people and leaving 19 others injured," Zulfiqaar Ali, Utter Pradesh district police chief's office spokesperson, told AFP.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the incident as "heart-wrenching". According to NDTV, the bus was traveling from the eastern province of Bihar to the capital, New Delhi.

Arvind Kumar, a police officer, stated that the injuries were immediately hospitalized, with most of them being in stable condition. "Authorities are in the process of identifying the victims, and a probe has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident," Kumar added.

According to Gaurang Rathi, a government official, the initial investigation indicates that the bus was speeding when it collided with the milk truck from behind, causing both vehicles to flip.

The accident was violent enough to tear off one side of the bus, ejecting people from the vehicle. Images on television showed bodies scattered across the road.
