ALBAWABA- At least 13 people were killed and more than 100 injured after a passenger train derailed in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca on Sunday, authorities said.
The Interoceanic Train, carrying around 250 passengers, partially derailed while rounding a curve near the town of San Francisco del Mar, sending several carriages off the tracks.
The Mexican Navy, which operates the railway, confirmed that 98 people were injured, with 36 requiring hospitalization. Five of the injured remain in serious condition.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies were deployed to the scene to assist passengers and evacuate the wounded. Authorities said a preliminary assessment points to a possible mechanical failure, though a full investigation is ongoing. There were no immediate indications of foul play.
The derailment disrupted services along the recently inaugurated Interoceanic Corridor, a flagship infrastructure project designed to link Mexico’s Pacific and Atlantic coasts and serve as a strategic alternative trade route.
In recent years, the country has experienced several major rail-related disasters, including the 2021 collapse of Mexico City’s Metro Line 12, which killed 26 people, and multiple derailments involving freight and passenger trains.
