Watani, the UAE's unique programme for promoting national identity, recently received a training course on project management skills designed for its staff and volunteers courtesy of Thuraya telecommunications, the leading provider of mobile satellite communications solutions. The event was more than just training since it showed an innovative way for social institutions and corporate bodies in the UAE to co-operate and highlight social responsibility.

The two-day course was part of Watani’s attempt to develop project management competencies among its base of employees and volunteers and create more awareness of the major corporates in the country and their functions.

Thuraya’s support to Watani is part of its commitment to community based programmes and social responsibility. For Watani, the training programme was also an opportunity to highlight its efforts towards achieving the Human Development objectives of the UAE Strategic Plan.

Experts from Thuraya telecommunications led the programme, taking participants through various project management domains such as project life cycle management, importance of planning, key categories of project management, risk management, procurement management and communication management.

H.E Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori, Director General of Watani, said: "Our partnership with Thuraya telecommunications represents an efficient and effective way of doing business and achieving varied goals in that process. It also shows how local businesses and civil society institutions can collaborate to transfer knowledge and experience in a simple and cost-effective manner.”

Mr. Ahmed Al Ahmad, Senior Manager for IT Department at Thuraya, added: “One of the core communication objectives of Thuraya is to maintain strong communication with the local society and provide effective solutions to different sectors within the UAE. The training we provided to Watani staff and volunteers centred on project management protocols and techniques that fit in with Watani’s activities.”
