Mobile app PIVOT aims to preserve lost histories and reclaim narratives in Palestine and beyond
The preservation of history (and her-story, and their-story) is a revolutionary act. As Egyptian-Lebanese artist Lara Baladi says, archiving is an act of resistance, especially in the midst of a political atmosphere that attempts to negate memory; it is a way of retreating from the action, collecting, documenting, and “making sure that this doesn’t get diluted in time and in space.” Whether it is by way of personal narratives, road signs, clothing, food, or photographs, the tendency toward preservation is about resisting erasure. It is ultimately about survival – of self and of community.

Long-simmering discontent in Ahwaz, the football-crazy, predominantly ethnic Arab capital of Iran’s Khuzestan province that Iraqi president Saddam Hussein unsuccessfully tried to exploit when he launched the Iran-Iraq war in 1980, exploded on the pitch earlier this month during an Asian championship League qualifier between the city’s state-owned Foolad FC and Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia.

Obama with drama: translating his comments on Israel’s Netanyahu from the Vulcan
Now that Leonard Nimoy is most unfortunately no longer with us, Barack Obama is the primary exemplar in American popular culture of the maddeningly calm, excruciatingly logical way of speaking that Star Trek creator Gene Rodenberry forever associated with the alien race, the Vulcans and the character Mr. Spock. Mr. Spock’s opposite was the plain-spoken, irascible Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy (played by DeForest Kelley). Obama needs a little Bones-speak sometimes.
In an interview with The Huffington Post on Saturday, Obama reacted to the Israeli election campaign, the victory of far right wing Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu, and his electoral rhetoric pledging no Palestinian state. What exactly he said, however, is a little obscured by Vulcan-speak, and here I offer a translation into plain, blunt English.
