U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived in Yemen on Tuesday on an unannounced visit. Under tight security, America's top diplomat landed in the capital of Sanaa, where she was pressing Yemeni leaders to intensify their efforts against al Qaeda networks in the country. She also expected to raise the issue of U.S.-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is believed to be hiding in Yemen.

This is the first U.S. secretary of state visit Yemen in 20 years. Before going to Yemen, she said her trip is aimed at underscoring U.S. support for the country and convincing Yemenis that Washington wants more than military ties.

"It's not enough to have military-to-military relations," she said, according to the AP. "We need to try to broaden the dialog. We need to have this dialog with the government."
