The Syrian army fired Friday on thousands of people who took to the streets in Syria calling to arm the free Syrian Army after the fall of the rebel stronghold of Baba Amr in Homs. At least 56 people were reportedly killed.
On Friday morning, seven trucks of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) arrived in Homs with food, medicines, blankets and baby milk, the ICRC said . Baba Amr districts has no electricity, no food and no means of communication, according to activists.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called on Syrian authorities not to carry on "retaliation" attacks in Baba Amr, expressing its concern after receiving unconfirmed reports of 17 executions.
Meeting in Brussels, European leaders raised their tone against the Assad regime, hoping "that those responsible for atrocities in Syria would face trials for their actions."
France has closed its embassy in Damascus to protest the "scandal" of the repression that has killed "more than 8,000 " people, said President Sarkozy.
The Syrian authorities announced they located Thursday in Baba Amr three bodies including those of American journalist Marie Colvin and Rémi Ochlik French reporter. The third body is of Spanish journalist Javier Espinosa who worked for El Mundo newspaper. Earlier this week, Espinosa's employers said that he had arrived in Lebanon "in perfect health."
According to the newspaper, the error could be explained by the fact that in his flight from Homs, the reporter "had to abandon all his work materials and business cards "which could be found" near the body of an activist who sadly died "in the operation."
