A security source on Saturday said the Egyptian army closed the main source which provides natural gas to the pipeline flowing to Jordan after it was blown up by an unknown group south of of el-Arish, the main city of North Sinai. The source added the Egyptian armed forces were able to close the source and trying to control the fire. Initial reports said the pipeline was going to Israel.
The pipeline is coming from Port Said, one of Suez Canal provinces. The Egyptian state television said that "terrorists" targeted the pipeline.
An eyewitness said that he heard explosions and saw huge flames rising south of El Arish. He added that the city's residents went up to the roofs of building to watch the fire. The source said that two gas-feed power plants in northern Sinai stopped operations.
On the other hand, the protests calling for President Mubarak's immediate departure continue for a second day in a row. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunfire in Tahrir Square in central Cairo early Saturday. Reports indicated that the army fired into the air to push the supporters of President Mubarak away from the area.
