Moroccan bloggers have called for a demonstration on February 20 to demand amendments in the constitution ahead of the legislative elections scheduled for 2012. They founded a group dubbed "For the Constitution of 2012" and urged "all the Moroccan liberals and friends of Morocco in the free world to rise up and participate in a a protest in and outside Morocco on Sunday, 20 February."
The group said that the aim of the protests is to demand a new constitution, which will expand the powers of the Prime Minister.
The bloggers called for peaceful demonstrations. They stressed that participants should stay away from provocations and be "careful of the enemies of democracy," who will try to provoke them.
During the past weeks, since the outbreak of the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia multiple groups on Facebook have been calling for a demonstration on 20th February in Morocco. The message is similar - demanding King Mohammed VI to carry out radical reforms in the kingdom.
These calls come as the Moroccan press continues its campaign against Prince Moulay Hicham, a cousin of King Mohammed VI, and journalist Abu Bakr Jamee who lives abroad. They both criticized the political situation and the conditions of freedoms and corruption in Morocco.
