A doctor told Al Arabiya television that four protesters had been killed in Cairo's Tahrir Square Thursday morning when the supporters of President Hosni Mubarak opened fire on protesters demanding his resignation. The doctor said that 13 protesters were lightly wounded.

Mubarak vowed on Tuesday to hand over power in September, angering protesters who want him to step down immediately.

On Wednesday, Mubarak supporters attacked the protesters in Tahrir Square, throwing petrol bombs and brandishing sticks while riding horses and camels. Opponents of the Mubarak responded by throwing stones.

The nearby military forces deployed in the area without interference despite the escalation of violence.

However, it appeared from footage aired by Al Arabiya that the army intensified its deployment in Tahrir Square in the early hours of Thursday.
