In Turkey, Sunday’s election results saw Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's plans for AKP majority slip away as the Kurdish leftist HD Party catapulted into parliament.

An initial count shows the AKP won 41 percent of the vote, and 327 seats in parliament, the New York Times reported. This is a huge number — but not the majority the AKP needed to amend the constitution to give Erdogan's presidential position executive power.

Meanwhile, the HDP surpassed the ten percent threshold to make parliament. This is huge for the Kurds, secular Turks and minority groups, since the HDP's win means both the possibility for a more liberal Turkey and the definite curtailing of Erdogan's power run.

But Sunday's election was historic in another way — more female delegates were elected than ever before, from 79 in 2011 to Sunday's 96. And it’s thanks largely to the HDP, whose 79 parliamentary seats will be filled by 31 ladies. The AKP still has more female representation with 41 delegates, but that's down by five from 2011, while the HDP's has more than doubled since then.

They're just the ones that got elected. Overwhelmingly more so than any other party, the HDP's platform was incredibly female based.
