On July 23, a hashtag entitled #ElQudsIsPalestineCapital-referring to the Arabic name for Jerusalem ‘Al Quds’-began trending on Twitter, continuing for several days. The tweets began when word got out that the land of west of the Jordan river between Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt is solely referred to as Israel on Google Maps.
Many vented their frustration on the social media site, and the hashtag is still trending today:

Google is raping Palestine.
However, it’s unclear why the hashtag began now. Palestine has been absent from Google Maps for several years.
Israel is a recognized member state of the UN, whereas the State of Palestine only has observer status. International law recognizes West Jerusalem as Israel, and East Jerusalem as occupied Palestinian territory, although Israel disputes this.
