Syria’s five-year-long civil war is raging on as strong as ever nowadays, with Aleppo presently suffering from a brutal siege as Syrian and Russian jets bombard the city’s east in an effort to defeat enemy rebel groups. But that’s not stopping young people in Latakia-a regime stronghold on the Mediterranean-from living it up. Pictures by AFP in India Times show hundreds of Syrians partying while the other parts of the country battle to the death.

The pictures could be from anywhere. They show people in bathing suits dancing under lights on Syria’s beautiful coast. Some are soaking up the sun while lying in the sand, some are swimming, and others are smoking hookah.

Yet the party goers at Wadi Qandeel beach are just over 100 km from Aleppo in the photos.

The images are a prime example of the striking contrasts of daily life in different parts of Syria.
