It's been almost a month since the photo of 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi shot the plight of refugees into the viral echelons of social media, forcing the world to acknowledge a communal failure in handling Syria's five year long civil war.
But now that the frenzy’s died down, perhaps the photo's longer term effect should be to teach us exactly how little we’ve been paying attention.
The reality is that breaking down what's happening in Europe and why is more complex than most of us care to admit.
This week Vox did a nice wrap up of the civil war's effects — spanning the exodus into neighboring countries, the mass displacement inside Syria, the mad dash to Europe and the border walls appearing to stop it.
