Current members of the US military, as well as veterans, have taken to Twitter to reassure a young Muslim girl that they will protect her rights as an American. The hashtag #IWIllProtectYou went viral after a mother described her young daughter’s fear of being kicked out of the country in the wake of Donald Trump’s controversial comments about Muslims.
Melissa Chance Yassini’s Facebook post described how her daughter, Sofia, was terrified that the army may come and remove them from their home because of Donald Trump’s plans to ban Muslims from entering the US. She wrote that Sofia had begun to pack up her favorite things to take with her, and checked the locks on the doors multiple times.

A US army veteran, Kerri Peek, noticed the post and called upon her fellow armed service personnel—both active and veterans—to reassure Sofia that they would protect her.
Her Facebook post went viral, and men and women in uniform began tweeting their support using the hashtag #IWillProtectYou.
