By now we know the incredible human cost of the violence that has plagued Iraq for the last decade, but it was brought into clear focus this week by a video of a toddler reacting to her soldier father leaving to fight.

The two minute clip has garnered some 30,000 views since it appeared on Facebook Sunday. In it, you see a soldier go to his wardrobe and pull out what appears to be an Iraqi army uniform before a toddler runs in and begins pulling at the fatigue jacket.

"No! No!," the girl cries in Arabic, pulling at the uniform as her father attemps to put it on. She keeps crying and tugging at the fatigues until he gives up and puts them back in the closet.

Some 1,150 civilians died in Iraq last month, according to the monitoring site Iraq Body Count, and that's before you count casualties from the Iraqi army and Shia miltias battling Daesh (ISIS) across the country.

Iraq may not technically be at war like Syria, but violence have been a constant part of daily life since the US invasion in 2003. Now, as Daesh (ISIS) grips swaths of territory across the country and a shaky federal government in Baghdad is still getting on its feet, this video reminds us of the people stuck in the middle.
