HMC hosts Qatar 1st Healthcare Risk Management Week

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is hosting the inaugural ‘Qatar Healthcare Risk Management Week’ from 8th -12th of May at Hajar Auditorium in HMC.

It is a unique initiative by the medical corporation to promote the knowledge and expertise of professionals involved in healthcare risk management.

The prestigious healthcare meet was inaugurated yesterday at the Intercontinental Hotel in Doha. HMC was represented by Mr. Gary Needle, Assistant Managing Director, Dr. Badriya S. Al Ali, Executive Director of Quality Management Department, Dr. Yousef Al Maslamani, Chief of Staff HGH, Dr. Moza Alishaq, Chairperson of the event and Assistant Executive Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety at HMC, among many other senior staff and officials.

The Risk Management Week is expected to see participation from over 250 medical professionals from Qatar and the larger GCC area. It will have leading speakers from UAE, Turkey, Oman, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Medical experts from University of Calgary, Weil Cornell Medical College-Qatar, Supreme Council of Health and Qatar University will also participate during the scientific program.

“Risk Management Week is the first such international meet being held in the GCC area. We have invited a host of eminent speakers from the gulf area, who will share their experience and also conduct workshop for participants from HMC and other medical professionals from Qatar,” said Dr. Moza Alishaq, Chairperson of the event and Assistant Executive Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety at HMC.

Dr. Moza further stated that the idea for organizing such an event arose from the need for risk management in healthcare organizations to reduce risk and increase the quality of care and assure culture of safety.

“As part of the activities during the Risk Management Week, there is a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) workshop on 8th and 9th of May. It will be conducted by Prof. Seval Akjun, Chief Quality officer and Professor of Medicine and Public Health, Basknet University in Turkey. From the 9th-12th of May, we will have different speakers from GCC area and medical professionals from HMC give lectures on various topics of interest,” Dr. Moza said.

Some of the key topics which will be covered during the Risk Management Week will include Managing Clinical Risk, Risk Management and Its Importance in Organizations, Integrating Patient Safety into Microsystems, How to Control 'Salmonella’ Outbreak at HMC, Discharge Against Medical Advice in Pediatric Emergency (DAMA), among many other relevant issues.

Along with the week long scientific program, a lot of social activities have been organized by Ms. Fatima Al Saleh, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, for the visiting medical experts from GCC and other countries.
