Female students from ADU show leadership potential based on environmental concerns
Abu Dhabi University at Al Ain placed 2nd overall at the 10th Inter College Public Speaking Competition hosted by the Emirates Environmental Group on the 29th and 30th of November at Dubai Knowledge Village.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research, students from the College of Business Administration at the Prince Sultan University, KSA, received the first place trophy.
A team of three students represented ADU from the College of Engineering and Computer Science, headed by Dr. Ashraf Khalil.
Hiba Abu Seedo, Rula Yanis, and Alaa Azraq delivered their speeches with enthusiasm to the delight of the judges and attendees, based on four themes: 'Intelligent Use of Water: Conservation or Management?'; 'Are we generating a lot of waste?'; 'Global Challenges – Local Actions'; and 'Environmental roles the media can play'.
The students' hard work was clearly evident from the presentations they delivered. Based on valid and factual cases, and thought-inspiring posters designed to depict the theme, their skillful public expression under a chosen theme, 'Global Challenges – Local Actions', earned for them a first place crystal trophy.
"The energy in the students' speeches was remarkable. Some of the points made during the presentation were intelligent, unique and quite practical under the scenario of environmental issues becoming increasingly relevant to society and the global community," said Dr. Nabil Ibrahim, Chancellor, ADU.
More than 60 private and governmental educational institutions from across the six GCC countries took part in the public speaking competition. Speaking about environmental concerns that are gaining momentum worldwide and fast becoming a priority for governments of nations across the globe, participants were judged objectively based on content, presentation skills and evidence of wide research.

The dream began with the Charter of Abu Dhabi University in the year 2000, After three years of planning, the university opened its doors in September 2003, to an entering class of 1,000 students on its two campuses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Unlike other colleges and universities in the UAE, ADU undertook the measures necessary to ensure that all of the degree programs it would offer had secured accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in advance of any students enrolling in them.
