The Syrian singer Karawan died last week at the age of 68, leaving behind “a rich legacy of nationalist and emotional songs,” according to Syria Times.
Karawan started a very successful career early 1950s through her songs for Damascus radio. The singer thrilling voice soon attracted the attention of prominent music composers at the time.
Karawan’s success took her to different Arab capitals, especially Cairo and Beirut where she was highly acclaimed by the Egyptian and Lebanese audience at the concerts she held there.
She sang 600 songs composed by Mustafa Hilal, Rafiq Shukri, Soheil Arafeh and many others.
Karawan’s fame in the Arab world was due in the major part to her national and pan-Arab songs that deal with the nation's causes, said the daily. The most famous of her songs is that sung for Egypt following the tripartite aggression against it in 1956 – Albawaba.com
