“The Light of Eyes” is a new theatrical performance directed by Ajaj Salim. The play is based on a novel written by the Turkish writer Khaldoun Ta’er, but it was adapted to the local environment in a very successful way, according to Syria Times.
The play deals with the story of two friends, Nur and Rami, who live in the same quarter. They are always together, but they are at odds in behavior and action. Nur is simple-hearted, clever and nationalist, while Rami is an opportunist person who commits a lot of mistakes and attributes them to his friend.
Nur’s father fell martyr in the Maysaloun battle and his mother died shortly after. His lack of parents gives him a psychological complex that changes to madness at the end of the play under the influence of his friend. Nur is so confident of his friend Rami who misuses this confidence in different situations.
The director employs the calendar in order to give a political background to the events that took place at the beginning of the 20th century, especially battle of Maysaloun and the other important battles that took place when Syria was under French occupation.
The director analyzes the political events that took place in Syria under the French mandate forces in a comic and sarcastic way – Albawaba.com
