Lebanese-Colombian pop/rock singer Shakira Mebarak makes her English-language debut, after five Spanish-language albums (including MTV Unplugged), according to thisiscyberia.com.
With Gloria Estefan’s husband Emilio heading her career as her manager and producer, and with Sony as her label, Shakira released her first English language album.
The new album also comes after Shakira spent two years attempting to improve her English so that her songs wouldn’t lose meaning in translation.
The 24-year-old Colombian sex bomb Shakira is one of the most listened to singers in the Spanish-speaking world. But on English-speaking stations, alas, her music may be too little.
Laundry Service, metroactive.com said, spawned her first English-language record." Laundry Service is an interesting record, because it mixes so many aspects of pop: the Latin salsa beats of Estefan's Miami Sound Machine and various New Wave guitar solos, all topped by Shakira's quiveringly precise, octave-shattering vocals and confessional lyrics.
Very few, if any, artists can make the crossover from pop to rock, and with this release Shakira is attempting to make an even more difficult crossing: from Spanish to English.
Shakira has been seen by Caucasians on Pepsi commercials, MTV2 and even the regular (as opposed to the Latin) Grammy Awards.
However, Shakira also plays guitar and writes most of her songs, which allows her to control its content and style, something she is very keen on – Albawaba.com
