Actor Robert Downey Jr. spent the weekend in a psychiatric hospital apparently for a bout of depression following his arrest last month on drug possession charges, CBS television reported Tuesday.

Downey, 35, requested the treatment and stayed in the hospital from Friday to Sunday, the television channel said.

The troubled actor, who was paroled from prison for "good behavior" in August, was arrested at a hotel in Palm Springs November 25 after police, acting on a tip, found "suspected methamphetamine and cocaine" in his room.

Downey posted 15,000 dollars bail and was released the following day. He is scheduled to be arraigned before a judge on December 27.

The actor was sentenced to three years in prison in 1999 after a series of drug arrests, but was released on appeal after serving a little more than a year.

Since his release, Downey has been residing in a Los Angeles area drug rehab facility.

Downey, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the title role of the 1992 movie Chaplin, landed a role on the hit television series Ally McBeal shortly after he was paroled last August.

Downey also was to have played the lead role in Mel Gibson's stage production of Hamlet later this year in New York. – AFP.
