The new series "University Girls" is a bold new Ramadan-time-showing drama that follows the daily lives of young women at college, highlighting the issues they face at this transitional stage in their lives. Girls, Girls, Girls - are they just looking for a good time?
The technical producer Mohammad Hussein Al Muteri has this much to say. He admits of the series that airs exclusively on Dubai TV during the holy month of Ramadan, that it contains many scenes that would be deemed liberal and daring. Among these apparently is a scene about a student who comes from a conservative family. This girl is affected by peer pressure, which leads to drastic behavioral changes that impact on her social conduct as well as education.
The scene is just one of many addressing life on and off of campus in a very close to the bone, unflinching way, particularly for this part of the world and (aired) at this time of the year. Still the series, according to the producer, does balance audience sensibilities and tastes, not forsaking the traditional status quo and mores generally prevalent in Arabic society.
"University Girls" is considered to go even further than last year's controversial series High School Girls, incidentally show-cased by daring Dubai TV last Ramadan. This show gained fans from the Gulf as well as across the Arab globe.
The college 'sequel' of sorts, unlike its high school predecessor includes tales of both male and female students, homing in on their struggles on the educational, emotional and familial level, through many social and romantic complexities. Its ratings are still to transpire.
The script is penned by Mohammad Nashmi, directed by Abdullah Hassan. It stars a string of names and newcomers as Abdul Imam Abdullah, Latifa Al Mujren, Shahed, Abdullah Boushari, Shafiqa Yousef, Tarek Al Kindiri, Essa Al Himer, Mohammad Sifer, Naser Kirmani, Ibrar Sabit, Bader Ali, Abdullah Al Rayes, Ahmad Khameis, Shelia Sabit, Lelia Abdullah, Nowaf Najem, Ghouror, Mona al Sayed, Soud Boushari and Rownaq.
