Lebanese singer Majeda Al Roumi has been chosen as an ambassador for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, making her the first Arab FAO ambassador, according to the Khaleej Times.
“I am going to visit many countries which need FAO support to find resources and to help them create job opportunities,” Roumi said at a press conference at the Dubai Press Club.
Roumi, who considers her appointment as a turning point in her career as an artist, said that she would work closely with other international ambassadors of the FAO in an attempt to break the wall of ignorance and alleviate poverty in the world.
“The progress of a nation is not measured by its technological development but by its respect for human rights. Art shows would be held for the purpose in collaboration with international artists such as Italian singer Albano,” Roumi added.
Abdul Mageed Al Shahal, manager of the FAO's TV programs and coordinator of the Telefood campaign, said that “FAO's ambassadors should be popular, educated, respected and should have faith in the organization’s message.”
“Mrs. Roumi embodies these standards by having a cultural and artistic background, reflecting the beautiful culture of Lebanon,” he added.
Shahal said the battle against hunger had been a humanitarian struggle as much as a political one.
“Hunger has no shape or nationality. That is why the FAO was founded in 1945 with 180 member countries,” added Shahal – Albawaba.com
