Laila Elwi might be Egypt's best known actress but she is also a distant relative of the ex-president Hosni Mubarak, as she revealed on 'Zai El Asal' (Like Honey) this week. Laila told viewers of the show, hosted by Nishan, that her husband is the uncle of Mubarak’s daughter-in-law and she is not the least bit ashamed of being tied to the former ruling family.
In fact, the two first ladies - acting and former - met before Laila got married. The Egyptian superstar said she regularly prays for Suzan Mubarak, the former first lady of Egypt, because of the ordeal she has had to undergo. Mrs. Mubarak has so far watched her husband and children go to prison on corruption charges. But for Laila, Egypt has been unfairly targeted. According to the her, other countries are much more corrupt than Egypt was under President Mubarak but haven't undergone the same violent transition of government.
Laila said she's yet to decide if she approves of new president, Morsy, but she said she wants to give him a chance to prove himself in the coming months. Despite all this talk of politics, the acting legend told viewers that she likes to keep her personal life separate from her political opinions and top of her priorities is not Egyptian politics but her family.
