The Kuwaiti film Dreams Without Sleep recounting events of the September 11 attacks in the US was screened at Cannes International Film Festival to a rousing reception by a number of international filmmakers, according to Kuwait News Agency.
Its Kuwaiti director, Waleed al Awadi, had been in New York city at the time of the terrorist attack on the twin towers there capturing with his camera some extraordinary footage of the disaster.
The documentary film, al Awadi’s first international venture, tracks the lives of a lebanese living in New York city, an American firefighter, an African journalist, an immigrant Zchech physician, and an American soldier working with the marines at the moment of the explosions that rocked the city of New York on September 11.
Famed Iranian director Muhsen Makhmalbaf appreciated al Awadi’s capturing of vivid and poignant moments of human interest.
Arab film critic Muhammad Reda pointed out that the film Dreams Without Sleep fleshes out with meticulous realism the agony people go through at a time of crisis.
American film critic Debohra Young, writing in the film journal variety, said that al Awadi’s docu-drama would be well sought after by television stations in the US and Europe.
