One of the Arab world's leading popular entertainers, Hani Shaker, has produced a new song dedicated to the recent Palestinian uprising and, in particular, to the memory of 12-year-old victim Mohammed Al-Durra.
The song Filisteen (Palestine) was written by poet Abdel Rahman Al-Abanoudi and composed by Kamal Al-Taweel. The Egyptian singer made his announcement last week at a press conference at the Marriot Hotel in Beirut, at which he praised the brave efforts of the stone-throwing Palestinian protesters who have been clashing with heavily armed Israeli security forces in Gaza and the West Bank as well as in Israel itself.
Shaker singled out as 'martyr' young Mohammed Al-Durra, who was filmed as he was shot and killed by the Israelis while cowering behind his father for protection. Pictures from the scene were flashed across the globe and drew much international attention as well as condemnation towards the Israeli forces.
The Egyptian singer, well known for hits such as Albi we Malou, Ghalta and most recently Ya Reitni, follows in the footsteps of Lebanese singer Diana Haddad. She recorded a song a fortnight earlier in support the Palestinian uprising, called Al-Haq Yuktub min Dami (The Right is Written with my Blood).
Leading arab singers like Iraqi Kathem Saher, Amr Diab, Ali Haggar, Asala Nasri and Walid Tawfiq have produced pro-Intifada songs, in addition to a group of 40 Egyptian actors and singers who recorded a song about the uprising which have been met with enthusiasm mixed with sympathy by the Arab and Muslim peoples since it broke out late September – Albawaba.com
