Lebanese singer Elissa has resigned from her post as a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations only a year after being appointed. Elissa was appointed in April 2011 by the United Nations as the Middle East Goodwill Ambassador for the UN’s affiliate organization IIMSAM (Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition) alongside prominent Kuwaiti singer Abdullah Ruwaished.

Sources at the UN headquarters in Dubai revealed that Elissa had repeatedly requested that administrators of IIMSAM create a program to include onsite visits for Elissa to affected areas around the Arab world to perform her duties as a Goodwill Ambassador, but her requests were not answered leading her to submit her resignation. Elissa stated that her position as a Goodwill Ambassador is useless if she is unable to help those who are in need and her duty make a difference cannot be met.

Elissa was chosen as a Goodwill Ambassador after Aycha Al Gaddafi, daughter of the late ousted Libyan President Muamar Gaddafi. Aycha was stripped of her post due to the bloody events imposed by her father while in power against revolutionists.
